Dear SPE-STX Members,
As we move into April we're back on daylight savings time and spring has certainly arrived! That means it's a perfect time of year to go out and play a round of golf with your friends at the annual SPE-STX golf outing. The event is on Monday April 18th so please come out and participate. You can sign up as a golfer or just come and volunteer if you would like to enjoy a day out of the office. Please check out are section website for more information on how to register.
We are also getting close to the end of our year so that means it's time for officer elections and appointments for committee chairs. We would really appreciate anyone who is interested in serving as a volunteer in some way for the section. Please contact any of the officers listed on our website to let us know you would be willing to help out.
After the golf outing our last meeting for this year will be in May. This is our annual Awards meeting where we honor the kids who have won awards in the Houston science fair as well as others for significant contributions.
As a final reminder please submit any applications for the member earned scholarship award by May 1st. The application is also on our website. These Awards will also be presented in the May meeting.

LinkedIn is a free web site for professional networking with over 300 million members in over 200 countries and territories.
LinkedIn enables discussions and networking between SPE-STX members and those related to the plastics industry. LinkedIn compliments the current SPE-STX web and membership to LinkedIn is free.
LinkedIn SPE-STX group currently has over 375 members as of 2014. To date, the tool has been used primarily to promote and discuss SPE-STX meetings.
Members are also notified of meetings from board members plus email blasts sent by SPE International.
As always, both the monthly newsletter and SPE-STX web site are the leading sources of information on SPE-STX activities.
You are invited to our annual awards banquet and high school project presentation. This year it will be held on Tueday, May 10 at the Spaghetti Warehouse on 901 Commerce Street, downtown. 6-8 p.m. Dinner Tickets are $25.
As a service to our South Texas members, we post positions offered and those seeking positions on our South Texas web site. There are currently recent positions posted. The Houston Public Library on McKinney has resources on plastics and polymers. Check out their catalog at http://catalog.houstonlibrary.org. If you are not near the McKinney location, you can arrange to pick up your books at your local branch.
The Fondren Library at Rice University has the most complete collection of books on plastics and polymers. This is also a prime resource for patent and trademark information, as well as other US Government documents. You cannot check out books there unless you join Fondren Library [$50], but you can arrange for books to be sent to your library by inter-library loan. Use their catalog at http://library.rice.edu/.
The next best place to browse is at the MD Anderson Library at the University of Houston central campus. South Texas Section has donated many plastics books to this library. If you plan ahead, you can get a TexShare library card from a library where you are a member, which will allow you to check out books from any U of H library. Their catalog is at http://www.library.uh.edu/.

Validation of An Analytical Method to Estimate the Bulk Melt Temperature from In-mold Temperature Data
Gabriel A. Mendible, David O. Kazmer, & Stephen P. Johnston
The University of Massachusetts Lowell, Lowell, MA
An analytical method for estimating the bulk melt temperature in the injection molding process by means of in-mold temperature sensors data has been validated. The method was evaluated for experimental data and data acquired with a computer simulation of the process. The simulation considered the heat flux and heat accumulation throughout the cycle in the mold. For the simulation, a full 3D model of the mold geometry was developed. Most trends correlated for both simulated and experimental data; however, the magnitude of the predictions varied due to the sensitivity of the analysis to the parameters.
