President’s Message

Dear SPE-STX Members,

As we move into April we're back on daylight savings time and spring has certainly arrived! That means it's a perfect time of year to go out and play a round of golf with your friends at the annual SPE-STX golf outing. The event is on Monday April 18th so please come out and participate. You can sign up as a golfer or just come and volunteer if you would like to enjoy a day out of the office. Please check out are section website for more information on how to register.

We are also getting close to the end of our year so that means it's time for officer elections and appointments for committee chairs. We would really appreciate anyone who is interested in serving as a volunteer in some way for the section. Please contact any of the officers listed on our website to let us know you would be willing to help out.

After the golf outing our last meeting for this year will be in May. This is our annual Awards meeting where we honor the kids who have won awards in the Houston science fair as well as others for significant contributions.

As a final reminder please submit any applications for the member earned scholarship award by May 1st. The application is also on our website. These Awards will also be presented in the May meeting.

Best regards,
Kevin Alexander

Plastics Information: Check It Out

Houston Public LibraryThe Houston Public Library on McKinney has resources on plastics and polymers. Check out their catalog at http://catalog.houstonlibrary.org. If you are not near the McKinney location, you can arrange to pick up your books at your local branch.

The Fondren Library at Rice University has the most complete collection of books on plastics and polymers. This is also a prime resource for patent and trademark information, as well as other US Government documents. You cannot check out books there unless you join Fondren Library [$50], but you can arrange for books to be sent to your library by inter-library loan. Use their catalog at http://library.rice.edu/.

The next best place to browse is at the MD Anderson Library at the University of Houston central campus. South Texas Section has donated many plastics books to this library. If you plan ahead, you can get a TexShare library card from a library where you are a member, which will allow you to check out books from any U of H library. Their catalog is at http://www.library.uh.edu/.

South Texas SPE 2015-2016 Board Meeting

Meeting Minutes
March 24, 2016

I.

Call to order

Kevin Alexander called to order the board meeting of the South Texas SPE at 4:00 PM on March 24, 2016 over a conference call.

II. Roll call

Voting Attendance (quorum = 7):

Kevin Alexander, President
Steve King, Vice President
Ashley Raines, Secretary
Iman Bahrani, House Committee Chair

Non–voting attendance:

Suzanne Diecks, Coordinator
Bill Diecks
David Hansen
Scott Owens
Chuck Crosby
Ed Bourbany
Tom Walsh

III. Board Members and Elections
  • A person can run for two terms on the board then they have to sit out for a term before they can run again.
  • Steve is president elect. The role of Past President will be vacant.
  • We need a Vice President elect and Treasurer*.
    ○ Dell Doyal may run for Vice President. We will ask.
    ○ Pete is a potential for Treasurer.
    ○ Terry may or may not want to continue as treasurer or board member.(*Peter Lauzon has accepted the position)
    ○ Executive committee liaison will still be Scott.
    ○ Ashley will run for secretary again.
    ○ There is still a need for a PO Conference chair. Chuck Crosby was involved last year and is willing to continue this year. Robert Portnoy volunteered to help with PO as conference chair.
    ○ Maybe they can co-chair or help each other out if it will be easier for them: We will wait until Monday for the PO Conference committee to make selections and recommendations.
  • We need to reach out to members and see if there are other people who want to participate in the election. We need to send out a ballot with a requested deadline.
  • Clifford Lee may be interested in being a board member. Tom Walsh will talk to him first.
  • Councilor - Ed as proxy so he doesn’t loose term eligibility: July 1st will be the first real term.
  • Tom Walsh, David Grice and Dell Doyle were added this year. We need to follow up with David Grice to see if he wants to continue his involvement.
  • David Hansen is still listed as a board member. He will take over the role of education chair.
  • There are 10 slots for directors that should be filled.
  • Dell Doyle and Iman have expressed interest in wanting to get more involved. They may be willing to take off some of the work load for Suzanne’s replacement.
IV. Document Storage and Delivery
  • The delivery of documents such as scholarship applications and communications with schools was discussed. The issue was that when someone leaves from a position, their address is no longer a valid location for sending documents.
    ○ A PO box was discussed, but it would be too much of a pain to change the location every year.
    ○ IF we are going to have a coordinator and will hire Eva, then Eva will take care of the documentation and scanning of scholarship documents, etc. We also need someone to keep all documents stored, including email archives.
    ○ Scott has suggested that we use the chain to store our documents as it is a secure place to store documents and has a library comparable to Dropbox.
  • Ashley is to scan and email a scholarship application to Suzanne that Mike H. received in the mail.
    ○ The SPE scholarship application needs to be updated.
    ○ Kevin will update the form and send it to Suzanne.
V. Scott’s Report
  • ● At our next meeting we will make a formal proposal for the executive board.
  • The 16-17 year election is coming up. April 8th is the first election for President Elect. Candidates have been received and vetted. Nomination committee recommended Raed Alzubi.
  • 4 candidates for vice president. All info can be found on SPE website. Nomination from floor for Greg Cambell as Senior Vice President.
  • Scott endorsed several candidates.
  • We did end up with financial closure report from 2015 - large amount less than what we expected. On a cash basis we ended up with a net loss of $200k. This year we are well ahead of budget.
  • We are shifting marketing streams to be more diverse. Exhibit sales are going well for Amtec.
  • Detroit section is to help out with administration - they have offered SPE to have shared resources that would be based in the Detroit area. It would be a full time position. Scott does not know where it stands at the moment, but it was ongoing as of a few weeks ago.
VI. Upcoming Events
  • Iman wants to know if we are still doing dinner at Hess club for May. We are looking at another vendors due to cost as HESS wants to charge a room fee ontop of a per person fee. Iman will look into another venue.
    ○ Will look into Spaghetti Warehouse by next week. We expect about 30-40 people for the 6-8 students. We expect to start at 6PM. The board meeting will be from 4:00 - 6:00 PM.
    ○ The next section meeting will be May 10th.
    ○ We will hold a conference call board meeting on April towards the end of the week of April 11th..
  • Golf outing is April 18th. There will be poker for $10 and food for $25. There may be a prize for the poker winner.
  • For the September kickoff we will not do the UH vs Oklahoma game, because tickets are much too expensive. It will more likely be for September 10th at the UH vs Lamar game.
  • Volunteers are needed for golf outing:
    ○ People to drive drink cars and help during registration.
    ○ We can’t take the golf cart to the driving range, so we need a driver to take people back and forth.
    ○ Ashley will volunteer for driving if she goes to the event.
    ○ Volunteers needed to serve lunch and dinner.
    ○ Suzanne will do a constant contact for volunteers.
VII. Adjournment
  1. Kevin moved to adjourn the meeting.
  2. Ashley seconded the motion.
  3. All were in approval.
  4. Kevin adjourned the meeting at 5:01 PM.

Validation of An Analytical Method to Estimate the Bulk Melt Temperature from In-mold Temperature Data

Gabriel A. Mendible, David O. Kazmer, & Stephen P. Johnston
The University of Massachusetts Lowell, Lowell, MA

Abstract

An analytical method for estimating the bulk melt temperature in the injection molding process by means of in-mold temperature sensors data has been validated. The method was evaluated for experimental data and data acquired with a computer simulation of the process. The simulation considered the heat flux and heat accumulation throughout the cycle in the mold. For the simulation, a full 3D model of the mold geometry was developed. Most trends correlated for both simulated and experimental data; however, the magnitude of the predictions varied due to the sensitivity of the analysis to the parameters.
